When Chaos Hits: Protecting Your Nervous System in Real Time

This morning, chaos brushed past us.
Not directly.
But close enough to feel it.
Something unexpected happened — the kind of thing that makes your heart spike and your mind spiral into “what if.” No one was harmed, thank God. But my body didn’t know that right away.
And that’s the thing about the nervous system.
It does not respond to logic first.
It responds to perceived threat.
When something startles you — a phone call, an accident, a loud bang, a conflict — your sympathetic nervous system activates. Adrenaline rises. Muscles tense. Breath shortens. Thoughts race.
Your body prepares for survival.
Even when you are technically safe.
The Pause Is the Power
The work is not to “not react.”
The work is to regulate after.
Here’s what I do in real time:
• Unclench my jaw
• Drop my shoulders
• Slow inhale through the nose
• Long exhale through the mouth
• Feel my feet on the floor
Then I remind myself:
We are safe.
That sentence alone can shift your physiology.
The Vagus Nerve & Why It Matters
Your vagus nerve is the main communication highway between your brain and body. It influences heart rate, digestion, mood, immune response — everything.
When stimulated gently through breath, humming, warm baths, or even splashing cool water on your face, it signals safety.
Safety lowers cortisol.
Lower cortisol lowers inflammation.
Lower inflammation supports long-term wellness.
This is not just spiritual language.
It’s biology.
Ritual as Regulation
This is why I believe so deeply in ritual.
Magnesium baths.
Herbal teas.
Nervine tinctures.
Breathwork.
Slow food preparation.
These are not aesthetic luxuries.
They are nervous system medicine.
When we intentionally create calm, we build resilience for the unexpected.
Returning to Center
Today, I chose to channel that energy into creation instead of rumination.
Creation grounds me.
Processing seamoss grounds me.
Blending herbs grounds me.
Your version might be different.
But find it.
Because chaos will always exist.
Regulation is the practice.
With intention & alchemy,
LibraScorpioAries
